Something else I did not know
Remember that seemingly gratuitous Civil War battle that Sergio Leone tossed into The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Did you think it was a tad implausible that so many troops were out West fighting over god knows what?
Turns out it's based on an actual campaign, in which the South sought to seize the gold and silver of Colorado and suchlike.
Bonus trivia: co-author of a wargame based on one of the battles in this campaign? Dave Arneson.

Hi Anderson -
ReplyDeleteI don't have anything germane to add, but wanted to drop you a comment to thank you for this entry (as well as many others.) I don't qualify as a Civil War aficianado or buff or anything of that level of involvement, but I didn't think at this time in my life that a campaign would come along that was a complete surprise to me.
I visit this blog almost every day; I appreciate the time and the effort you put into it. I find that I learn almost every visit, either about philosophy or literature or law.
I enjoy your posts at Volokh as well.
Best wishes,
wolfefan
Thanks much, Wolfe! As in "Gene Wolfe fan"?
