Anders Behring Breivik

Early reports were 20 dead at the Labor Party youth camp outside Oslo in today's terror attack. That turns out to have been a sad underestimate:
A Norwegian who dressed as a police officer to gun down summer campers killed at least 80 people at an island retreat, horrified police said early Saturday. It took investigators several hours to begin the realize the full scope of the massacre, which followed an explosion in nearby Oslo that killed seven and that police say was set off by the same suspect.

One has to suppose that most of the victims were children. What a remarkably evil man.

This comes as our 16YO heads for the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden. We imagine that whatever security the Swedes had in mind will be augmented.

... You can't make this stuff up. Jim Lindgren has found a pic of the murderer as well as a pre-massacre news item citing Breivik as a nationalist who criticized his government as insufficiently anti-Islam. Because you know, those Muslims might come over and kill your children one day.

... He is clear on the point that he wants to explain himself,” Roger Andresen told reporters Saturday. Oh, goodie.

... From one of his blog comments:
"The dare not openly express their viewpoints in public because they know that the extreme Marxists will trump them. We cannot accept the fact that the Labour Party is subsidising these violent "Stoltenberg jugend", who are systematically terrorising the politically conservative," the post reads.

He is making a reference to the youth movement of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, who heads the Labour Party.
Well, he certainly took it to those terrorizing youth.

... Jennifer Rubin, happy to exploit any horror for her ideological benefit -- no matter the perversion of logic -- writes that the attacks are "a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists." A reminder why I was not mistaken to delete my bookmark to the WaPo.

  1. I have followed news here in Norway all day and from comments made from politicians from right to left, your 16 year old will probably come to a Scandinavia very similar to the way it was before the attacks. The focus has been on keeping an open and transparent society, meet the attacks with more democracy and empathy for the victims. It is certainly good to see so lite hate in the comments from both politicians and normal people.

Hope the Scout Jamboree will be a good experience, even if the weather is not the best. I am sure it will be safe.

  2. Transcript from the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs are fairly typical:

See also statements from the embassy website:

  3. Thanks, Gustav. I'm confident it will be; his mom was quite freaked out however.

I am curious how he got an automatic weapon, assuming those reports are correct.

  4. The automatic weapon is definitely illegalm but his pistol might have been legally purchased. There is reported to by an active a black market for such weapons in Norway, which is not too hard to get in touch with for a dedicated person. There are several indications that he has planned this for several years... His 1500 page political manifest, "2083 - A European Declaration of Independence" ( ) and the fact that he rented a farm for no other obvious reason than having a reason to purchase fertilizer for the bomb.

Noone can ever be absolutely sure that evil will not strike where you are, but I can assure you, and your wife, that we feel absolutely safe here. I have a number of friends at a large 4H camp in Denmark, that started today, as well as scouting friends that I suppose will be at the jamboree in Sweden. If you have any specific questions you think I might be able to answer, please feel free to contact me. My e-mail address is available from my Blogger profile.

  5. These attacks were planned for a long time. The terrorist published a 1500 page manifest and diary, written in English, on the day of the attacks ( ) where he describes the European black market for weapons. It is, however, unclear if he has acquired an illegal (semi)automatic weapon or used a legal hunting riffle.

I have been a camp leader for many years in 4H camps throughout Scandinavia. Although there are differences between scout jamborees and 4H camps, feel free to contact me on the e-mail address on my Blogger profile if there is anything you or your wife want to ask about.

  6. Thanks again, Gustav! We trust the Jamboree will be safe. Heaven knows, Americans have little ground to fear gun violence in *other* countries ....
