Does this mean he has had so many gift cars he can't keep track, or so many friends that good he can't keep track? Or a bit of both?

Somehow this ties into that Janis Joplin song. The Lord gave him that car.
Maybe he had a "garage-warming party" and all of his friends gave him cars, but--darn the luck!--he forgot to write down who gave him what. I can only imagine how vague his thank you cards must have been!
